I felt it the other night while walking my dog: an ever so slight Fall-esque chill in the air. Just a cool August night compared to the heat + humidity that July brought, but still.
Summer is about to slip through our fingers. And it’s right about now, with about two-ish weeks left until school starts, that I start to *slightly* panic.
I didn’t have enough (any) picnics! My local ice cream shop is going to close soon! I need to get on as many boats as possible ASAP!
Maine summers are precious, fleeting. And they never, ever feel like enough time. And, if like me, you are also feeling the urgency to soak up every second that remains, let’s strategize together. No matter if every summer bucket list item wasn’t checked off this year - we’re going to go out with a bang.
So, let’s remedy whatever it is you need a bit more of before we wrap Summer 2024:
More. Outside. Dinners.
Get to those patios ASAP, y’all.
Wander at Longwoods (Cumberland, Maine)
First come, first serve on the family-friendly patio at this delicious farm-to-table restaurant serving up homemade pizza (while inside fine dining awaits.) On remaining Wednesday nights this summer there is live music at 6PM - and on Thursdays, it’s outdoor movie nights! Kiddos can relax on a blanket and watch classics like Toy Story or Land Before Time while adults enjoy a nice meal.
Toddy Pond Farm (Monroe, Maine)
Reservations for this farm-to-table spot are available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. You’ll dine outside while listening to live music, have the opportunity to visit with the animals and enjoy drinks by the bonfire or inside the barn!
Summer Ocean Hikes? Need.
Obviously, endless options here. But here are some favorites that I promise are worth the drive.
Barred Island Preserve (Deer Isle, Maine)
It’s surely the memories I have tied to it - but this 2.5 mile out-and-back trail is in my top 5 favorite walks in all of Maine. It’s pretty simple, staightforward - but it’s got it all: moss covered everything, varying terrain and a gorgeous beach that you are bound to have all to yourself. Time it with low tide and you’ll be able to walk out to the island to explore.
LaVerna Preserve (Bristol, Maine)
This 2.5 mile walk lands at 3,600 feet of extraordinary rocky ocean shoreline. It’s hard to describe just how incredible the rock formations are along the water - allot yourself extra time to sit and watch the waves crash.
Didn’t Eat My Weight in Oysters
We can fix this by land and/or sea!
Oyster Farm Walking Tour at Glidden Point (Edgecomb, Maine)
Farm Tours are offered daily at 10:45AM & 12:30PM at this oyster farm along the Damariscotta River. After the tour, enjoy fresh oysters or grab lunch from their onsite food truck (which is closed Mondays and Thursdays.)
Oyster & Lobster Roll Cruise with Seacoast Tours (Freeport, Maine)
Book a Saturday tour on August 24th or August 31st (or Saturdays in September!) at 2:00PM or 5:00PM. You’ll head to Mere Point Oyster Company’s floating food truck in Maquoit Bay to enjoy fresh oysters, lobster rolls and brews!
Secret Swimming Holes, please.
Make use of those bathing suits while you can!
