My Favorite 5 Miles of Brooklin
or 10 minutes of bliss. plus outdoor films, taylor swift succulents and more.
I recently spent a long weekend on the Blue Hill Peninsula - a blissful, gluttonous, kids-free weekend with my husband.
In addition to my last newsletter (the World’s Smallest Honor System Bookstore) I have more gems to divulge in future newsletters from this pocket of Maine - but today, I’m looking forward to sharing my favorite 5-ish mile stretch in Brooklin.
From a humble pie stand to a soul-lifting ocean stroll, here’s a 5 mile stretch to bookmark:
Wild Fern Pies
As if it’s any surprise to you all: here is another Honor System pie stand that I absolutely adore! Tucked against a field of wildflowers near Naskeag Point, you’ll find this tiny outpost stocked with mini hand pies, 44 North Coffee, quiches and whatever else owner, Sarah Havener, whips up for the day. Exact address is here on google maps!
✦ Limited hours: Mondays & Fridays in the summer from 7AM to sellout.
Harriman Point Preserve
I didn’t expect to fall in love with this 2.8 mile loop trail as much as I did. We happened to walk it at low tide - and I’d highly suggest doing so! At low tide, you can walk out to a small island and the tidepooling becomes that much more fun. And perhaps coolest of all: Harriman Point provides a view west across Allen Cove, where you can see the former residence of E.B. White! Something for everyone: endless beaches to stroll, gorgeous root and moss covered paths, varying terrain!
✦ 2.8 Miles, mostly flat with exposed roots. Pursue the loop clockwise.
Brooklin Candy Co
Okay, listen: Brooklin Candy Co is not your average candy store. I repeat: this is not your average candy store!! Owner Blossom Kravitz stocks her store with hard to find candy from across the globe. All of your favorites from childhood are here - along with rare, unique and off-the-wall treats! You’ll also find trinkets of every size, fair trade slippers, robes, kaftans and so much more. I loved this place so much (and left with FAR too much candy) - that I almost devoted an entire newsletter to it. Go, go, go!
✦ Open daily in the summer from 10AM-4PM.
Leaf and Anna
A sweet little store stocked with “fun & functional goods for you and everyone you love.” With art, homegoods, cookware and an extensive book collection, Leaf and Anna is a little gem of a store.
✦ Open daily, 10AM-5PM.
The Brooklin Inn
If you want the most satisfying, delicious dinner at the most intimate and dreamy of settings - The Brooklin Inn has got you. Housed in a lovingly restored Inn (with seating also available outside under their stringy lights), this neighborhood restaurant dishes out meals driven by local and seasonal produce. I enjoyed every dish immensely and failed to get ANY pics as I was too busy polishing them all off. Stand out dish was The Milanese (chicken cutlet, tonnato, fennel salad, lemon) - you’ll just have to trust me without any photo proof. PS: you can book a room at this dreamy Inn as well, of course!
✦ Open Wednesday-Saturday, 5-8PM. Reservations recommended.
Just beyond this 5 mile stretch there is so much more to love, savor and enjoy in the neighboring towns of Sedgwick, Brooksville, Deer Isle and others. And there will be more on that soon.
